POP UP DINNER: SADE ZINHAGEL

Another pop-up coming sooner than you think, and this is a very special one: comfort food made vegan by our very own Sade Zinhagel! Some of you may know her as the self-taught cook from the old Oma Ietje, where she cooked the daily meal every Thursday and Friday evening. A meal that was inspired by American, African, Caribbean and Latin street food culture. Nearly 7 years ago she ditched meat, fish and dairy for health reasons and now advocates for plantbased cuisine. In her journey to becoming plantbased she created a platform where she showcases the community that cultural veganized food ain’t that scary and boring. During this pop up dinner Sade will prepare a three course vegan comfort meal.

Did you know that the Rijsttafel is a colonial invention? It emerged through the interactions between Dutch colonizers and the diverse culinary traditions found in the Indonesian archipelago. It was once utilized as a symbol of colonial power and prestige and was introduced to the Netherlands by the Indo-European community, also known as the Indische community. If you have been residing in the Netherlands, it is likely that you have predominantly been exposed to Indische cuisine, which combines European and Indonesian influences. I would like to extend an invitation to explore Indonesian cuisine and its diverse flavors.

In this workshop, participants will embark on a flavorful journey guided by Kimberly Kwanten, where they will learn to prepare a variety of central Javanese dishes. This exciting workshop will cover the preparation of different dishes, including aromatic rice, kering tempeh, and opor ayam/opor jamur. Whether you are a food enthusiast or a history buff, join us on this flavor exploration journey to discover the hidden flavors and intricacies of Indonesian cuisine and the legacies of Dutch colonialism.

Kimberly Kwanten is a dedicated youth psychologist and sociologist. With her extensive knowledge in the fields of vulnerability and inequality of opportunities, she recognizes the importance of considering the social-historical context, cultural backgrounds, and trauma-informed care when working with children and youth. As a colonial history teacher and educator, Kimberly inspires young people to advocate for human rights, democracy, and inclusivity. She simplifies complexity and empowers young individuals to critically analyze systems and become catalysts for change in their communities. Her work is devoted to creating a fair and just society based on inclusion, empathy, and respect for diversity.
